A wall tapestry and a poster both put a picture on a wall, but they are different objects. A poster is a sheet of paper that normally goes behind glass or into a frame. A tapestry here is a printed polyester cloth with hemmed edges that you hang flat on the wall. The decision is mostly about the wall, not about taste: how big the surface is, how you can fix things to it, and how much work you want to do.
The short answer
- Choose a tapestry if you want a large picture without a frame, the wall can take cloth hung by its top edge, and you do not mind that fabric hangs softer than paper.
- Choose a poster if you want a crisp, flat picture at a precise size, plan to frame it, or want to start small and add pictures over time.
What each product is made of
Facts from our own product pages: a wall tapestry is 100% polyester with hemmed edges and is described as lightweight and easy to hang, move or fold for storage. A poster is printed on paper in one of three finishes: Fine Art (285 gsm), Semi Glossy (180 gsm) or Matte (200 gsm), and ships rolled. The paper options are explained in Fine Art vs Matte vs Semi Glossy poster paper.
| Wall tapestry | Poster | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | 100% polyester cloth, hemmed edges | Paper: 285 gsm Fine Art, 180 gsm Semi Glossy or 200 gsm Matte |
| Usual size on this shop | 26 × 36 in (66 × 91 cm), portrait or landscape; a few listings also offer 50 × 60 in (127 × 152 cm) | Many sizes, from 5 × 7 in (13 × 18 cm) upward; 12 × 18 in is 30 × 46 cm |
| Frame | None needed | Optional; our framed posters are a separate product |
| Care | Per the product data: cold gentle machine wash with similar colours, tumble dry low or hang dry, no bleach, no dry cleaning | Wipe dust off gently with a clean, dry cloth |
Size: where a tapestry wins
A single 26 × 36 in tapestry is 66 × 91 cm. A 12 × 18 in poster is 30 × 46 cm. So the tapestry covers more than four times the area of that poster (about 6,039 cm² against about 1,394 cm²) without any frame. If you want a wall to look filled with one picture, that is the difference. Poster sizes and what they look like on a wall are covered in Poster sizes in cm and inches.
Worked example: a sofa 200 cm wide. The guideline used across our guides is a picture, or group of pictures, about 60 to 75 percent of the furniture width, here 120 to 150 cm. A 91 cm wide landscape tapestry reaches 46 percent, a little light. A 127 cm wide tapestry (the 50 × 60 in size, where offered) reaches 64 percent. One 12 × 18 in poster is far below that, which is why posters above a sofa are usually hung as a row of three; the sofa guide shows the arithmetic.
Detail and finish: where a poster wins
Paper holds a straight edge and a flat surface. Cloth does not. A tapestry hangs from its top edge, can wave slightly where it meets a wall, and shows the weave of the fabric up close. Fine detail in a motif such as small architecture or lettering reads more cleanly on paper. If your favourite motif is detailed, look at it as a poster first. We cannot promise how a particular motif will look on cloth from a screen preview, because each item is printed to order by a print partner.
Hanging and rentals
The tapestry product details do not list hanging hardware, so plan how you will fix it before you order: a dowel and cord at the top, clips along the top edge, or a fixing that suits your wall. Posters can be pinned, taped or framed, but sticky solutions are not guaranteed to be wall-safe; see how to hang posters without damaging a rental wall. Whatever you choose, test the fixing on an inconspicuous spot first and read the wall owner’s rules.
Light, moisture and cleaning
Cloth can be refreshed in a cold gentle wash according to the care data above; paper cannot be washed, only dusted. Keep both away from damp walls and from radiators and direct sun. We do not state fade-resistance figures because we have no test data for either product.
A quick test before you decide
Cut a sheet of newspaper or wrapping paper to the size you are considering, 66 × 91 cm for the tapestry or 30 × 46 cm for the 12 × 18 in poster, and tape it to the wall for a day. If the paper looks lost, go bigger; if it dominates the room, go smaller. This costs nothing, and the paper also shows you where the wall is uneven, which matters more for cloth than for a framed sheet.

Everything here is made to order: production usually takes 2 to 7 business days and transit adds to that, see the shipping policy. Because items are made to order, we cannot accept returns for a wrong size or colour choice after delivery, except where you have a statutory right of withdrawal (14 days for consumers in Germany and the EU, return shipping at your cost) or warranty rights; the refund policy has the details. We recommend measuring your wall before you order.
