How Big Should a Wall Tapestry Be? Sizes for Bed, Sofa and Dorm

The sizes of a wall tapestry are fixed by the product, so the useful question is not what you want, it is whether the size on offer suits your furniture. Most tapestries on this shop are 26 × 36 in (66 × 91 cm), printed in portrait or landscape. A few listings also offer 50 × 60 in (127 × 152 cm). Check the size selector on the product page for the motif you like, because not every motif has every size.

The method: aim for 60 to 75 percent of the furniture width

The guideline in our other guides is that a picture above furniture should be about 60 to 75 percent of the furniture’s width. It is a design rule of thumb, not a law, but it gives a result that rarely looks lost or crowded. Multiply the furniture width by 0.6 and 0.75 and compare with the tapestry widths. Read the table with a clear head: with a 26 × 36 in tapestry the choices are narrow. A single 91 cm tapestry is a good size for a twin or full bed, a borderline size above a queen, and small above a sofa or king bed. For a wider wall you have two honest options: choose a motif that offers the 50 × 60 in size, or hang two tapestries side by side with a gap of 5 to 10 cm. Two 91 cm tapestries with a 5 cm gap are 188 cm wide in total (2 × 91.4 + 5), which is 97 percent of a 193 cm king bed width, so allow a margin or use a larger gap.

Height

Hang the centre of a tapestry at about 145 to 153 cm from the floor in a living space, the usual gallery eye level. Above a bed or sofa, instead leave a gap of roughly 15 to 25 cm above the headboard or sofa back and let the height follow from the size. A 91 cm tall tapestry with its bottom edge at 100 cm above the floor has its centre at 145.7 cm. Measure from the floor, mark the top corners and use a level; cloth hides a crooked edge less than you expect.

Dorm and small rooms

In a dorm room the wall space is often the area above a twin XL bed (96.5 cm wide) and a desk. A portrait 66 × 91 cm tapestry above the bed headboard covers 68 percent of the bed width. Landscape orientation at 91 cm is almost as wide as the bed (95 percent), which looks like a headboard wall hanging rather than a picture. Choose by the effect you want. Portrait or landscape?

The cloth is the same either way; only the print orientation changes. Portrait suits a narrow bed or a wall beside a door, landscape suits a wide sofa wall. The motif was composed in one orientation, so pick the listing for the orientation that matches the picture instead of rotating your idea of the room around it.

Common mistakes

Measuring the wall instead of the furniture: the furniture width is what the picture is judged against.
Ordering the 36 × 26 in landscape for a king bed and expecting it to fill the wall; at 91 cm it is under half of 193 cm.
Skipping the fixing plan: cloth usually sags in the middle if it is supported at only a few points, so plan support along the whole top edge.
