Mouse Pad or Desk Mat: What to Buy for Which Desk

A mouse pad and a desk mat do the same job under your mouse, but they cover very different amounts of desk. Here the difference is concrete: our mouse pad is one size, 7.5 × 9 in (19 × 23 cm), and our desk mats come in up to three sizes, the largest 15.5 × 31.5 in (39 × 80 cm). Not every motif is offered in all three: the large mat is available for roughly one motif in five, and most motifs have the small mat only, so check the size selector on the product page. The right choice depends on what you put on the desk.

The sizes, side by side

ProductSizeIn cmArea
Mouse pad7.5 × 9 in19 × 23about 435 cm²
Desk mat, small12.1 × 14.4 in31 × 37about 1,124 cm²
Desk mat, medium13.8 × 23.6 in35 × 60about 2,101 cm²
Desk mat, large15.5 × 31.5 in39 × 80about 3,150 cm²

So the smallest desk mat is about 2.6 times the area of the mouse pad, and the largest is about 7.2 times. The mouse pad exists for the mouse only; the larger desk mats are big enough to carry a keyboard as well.

Materials

  • Mouse pad: 4 mm thick neoprene, non-slip, full print on a smooth surface.
  • Desk mat: 100% polyester front, 100% natural rubber backing, anti-fray edges, black non-slip base; supports optical and laser mice.

These are the specifications on the product pages. We have no data on mouse tracking accuracy for particular sensors, so we do not claim performance beyond what the supplier states. For a gaming mouse with special requirements check the sensor maker’s advice.

How to decide: measure your desk

Take the width of your desk and the width of the space you actually use. Divide the mat width by the desk width to see how much of the desk it covers. For an 80 cm mat: on a 120 cm desk it covers 67 percent; on a 140 cm desk, 57 percent; on a 160 cm desk, 50 percent. A 60 cm mat on the same desks covers 50, 43 and 38 percent. A 37 cm mat covers 31, 26 and 23 percent. The mat needs to be wide enough for your keyboard and mouse together, so measure your keyboard and add space for the mouse to travel.

Three setups worked through

  • Laptop on a 100 cm desk, external mouse: the mouse pad is 23 cm wide, 23 percent of the desk. The small desk mat, 37 cm wide, is 37 percent. Either leaves room for the laptop.
  • Monitor, full keyboard and mouse on a 140 cm desk, 70 cm deep: an 80 × 39 cm mat takes 57 percent of the width and leaves 31 cm of depth (70 − 39) for the monitor stand and anything else at the back.
  • Compact 120 cm desk: an 80 cm mat leaves 40 cm, or 20 cm each side if centred. A 60 cm mat leaves 60 cm.

Questions people ask

Can a desk mat replace a mouse pad? In most cases, yes. The supplier states the desk mat supports optical and laser mice, so it is meant to be the mouse surface itself. Will it slip? The desk mat has a black non-slip base and the mouse pad is described as non-slip; neither claim is a guarantee on every surface. Does the print wear? We have no wear test data, so we cannot give a figure; follow the care advice below and avoid harsh cleaners.

What to measure before you order

  • The usable width of the desk, without the part under a monitor stand or lamp base.
  • The depth in front of the monitor foot: a 39 cm deep mat must not reach under it unless you want the stand on the mat.
  • The width of the keyboard you use, plus about 15 to 20 cm to the side for the mouse. This is a practical allowance, not a standard.
  • Whether the desk edge is rounded or sharp; the mat lies flat on the surface but does not wrap the edge.

Cleaning

Both products use the same care advice from the supplier: warm water and dish soap for spots, a soft-bristled brush for stubborn ones. It is not necessary to soak the whole pad.

Design and mood

Because the print covers the full surface, a desk mat is also a piece of decoration. A dark scene such as Dusk Forest Torchlight Desk Mat blends into a plain surface, while a mouse pad like Barrel Sauna by Lake Mouse Pad gives a smaller spot of colour. Choose by how much of the desk should be the picture.

What to know before ordering

Both are printed to order; production usually takes 2 to 7 business days, and delivery is covered in the shipping policy. Desk mats are not included in the poster free shipping offer. Wrong-size choices are not accepted as returns after delivery except under your statutory right of withdrawal (14 days for consumers in Germany and the EU, return shipping at your cost) or warranty rights, see the refund policy.
